The Great War

Remembering Our Fallen Thanks to a generous grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, members of Howden-le-Wear Local History Society researched the stories behind the men who lost their lives as a result of World War I, and whose names are listed on the War Memorials in Howden-le-Wear and Fir Tree, two neighbouring villages within the same parish in County Durham. The results of this research were published in early 2015 in the book Remembering Our Fallen. This book not only tells the stories of these men, but also gives information about various aspects of life in these villages in the early part of the 20 th century. What follows is a summary of each man's story. The full stories – some of them detailed, others short as a result of the limited source material available – can be read in Remembering Our Fallen. Copies of this book are available from the Society at a cost of £5-00, plus £2-00 postage. Anybody wishing to purchase a copy is asked to contact the Society at: Howden-le-Wearhistorysociety@hotmail.co.uk Profits from the sales of the book are to be given to appropriate Forces' charities.
