Archibald McLeod was born in Pencaitland, Haddingtonshire, south east of Edinburgh. He was a farm labourer, and by 1914 he was
living at Harperley Station at Fir Tree.
He volunteered and enlisted in the 1
st
Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He was posted to France on the 4
th
December 1915, and was killed
in action shortly afterwards on the 14
th
January 1916, at the age of 31.
Archibald McLeod was buried with his four comrades at La Clytte Military Cemetery and a wooden cross was erected over his grave.
This was replaced with a marker of Portland Stone after the war was over.
