Edward William HOGGARTH Private 204336, 5 th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. Died 4 th July 1917. Edward William Hoggarth was baptised on the 3 rd December 1886 at Crook. At the time of his enlistment on the 19 th February 1916 he was living in Fir Tree and his occupation was that of a cartman. He enlisted in "B" Company, 5 th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, but was transferred to the Army Reserve the following day, possibly because he was insufficiently fit for active service. He was mobilised on the 30 th May 1917, but was admitted to Catterick Military Hospital on the 6 th June with a complaint affecting his urinary tract. He became seriously ill and died on the 4 th July of heart and renal failure. Private Edward Hoggarth's army service lasted for only 35 days. His body was returned to County Durham and he was buried at Crook cemetery.
