Sydney HARDY
Lance Corporal 3/8290, 1
st
Northumberland Fusiliers.
Died 7
th
July 1915.
Sydney Hardy was born in the summer of 1893 in Howden-le-Wear, one of eight children.
In 1911, Sydney and his brother Roy were coal mining putters, and his father William and brother Wilfred were coal mining hewers.
Sydney enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers, known as the "Fighting Fifth" as the regiment was, until 1881, the Fifth Foot.
The 1
st
NF had landed at Le Havre on 14
th
August 1914 and Sydney was posted to France on the 28
th
November 1914. They saw heavy
fighting through the winter, including St Eloi in April. It appears Sydney was a good soldier and he was promoted to lance corporal in
the field.
The Commonwealth War Graves Certificate states that Sydney died on the 7
th
July 1915, his Medal Roll Card showing that he died as a
result of his wounds. His body was never found and he is remembered on the memorial in Harlebeke New British Cemetery, 32 miles
east of Ypres.
Sydney Hardy is remembered on the Howden-le-Wear War Memorial, but is listed as a private and not as a lance corporal.
