Charles FAWCETT Private 22642, Northumberland Fusiliers & Private 12037, Machine Gun Corps, Durham Light Infantry. Died 22 nd July 1917. Charles Fawcett was born in 1890 in Tanfield Lea, Tantobie, in County Durham. The 1911 Census shows the family living in Tanfield Lea, Charles working as an above ground colliery labourer. It is believed that after 1911 Charles moved to work for Harperley Collieries and lodged in Fir Tree during the week. Charles enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers, later transferring to the 54 th Company, Machine Gun Corps, Durham Light Infantry. He was fighting in the area around Arras when he was wounded and killed on the 22 nd July 1917 at the age of 27. He was buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. Charles is named on the War Memorial in Fir Tree and also on the memorial in the Methodist Chapel at Tanfield Lea.
