Joseph RAMSHAW Private 252407, 1 st /6 th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. Died 13 th June 1918. Joseph Ramshaw was born in Stanley, County Durham, in 1892. At the time of the 1911 Census he was lodging at Billy Row and was working in a Fir Tree drift mine as a putter. In April 1914 he married Florence Vitty of Institute Terrace, Fir Tree. He enlisted at Bishop Auckland at approximately the same time as his two brothers-in-law, George and Fred Vitty, joining the 1 st /6 th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. Joseph landed in France on the 20 th April 1915, and was wounded in May 1918. He was brought back to Fir Tree where he died on the 13 th June 1918, aged 26. He was buried in St Mary’s churchyard, Howden-le-Wear.
