Thomas BRETT Sapper 112628, Royal Engineers. Died 21 st December 1915. It has been difficult to identify positively the Thomas Brett named on the Howden-le-Wear War Memorial, but the soldier most likely to be he served in the Royal Engineers with the 178 th Tunnelling Company. He was a miner, and this would add strength to the identification and to his having served with the Tunnelling Company, as Durham miners had the reputation of being the best people to have in these regiments. He died on the 21 st December 1915, just over three weeks after arriving in France, and is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial, as well as the memorial in Howden-le-Wear.
