Robert Taylor CLARK Private 54729, 7 th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment. Died 27 th October 1918. Robert Taylor Clark, the eldest son of George Clark, was born in Howden-le-Wear in 1899. His father had been killed in action in 1915, and Robert enlisted at Bishop Auckland in the 7 th (Service) Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment. This battalion was engaged in various major battles on the Western Front. Robert was killed at the Battle of the Sambre, one of the final battles of the war, on 27 th October 1918, only two weeks before the ceasefire and Armistice. Following his death, Remembrance Cards were distributed and there were memorials to Robert recorded in France and at home. He was buried in Romeries Communal Cemetery Extension and is also commemorated on the Howden-le-Wear War Memorial.
