Alfred BRIDGES Private 3262 & 751174, Royal Field Artillery. Died 18 th January 1917. Alfred Bridges was born in 1896 in Low Beechburn, Crook. By 1911 he was working alongside his father, Alfred, in the colliery as a 'helper up' in the mine. Alfred senior was the colliery timekeeper. Alfred enlisted as a driver in the Royal Field Artillery, and by the time he died on the 18 th January 1917, he was a gunner with the 250 th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He was buried at the St Sever Cemetery Extension in Rouen, aged only 20. His gravestone had the words "Peace, Perfect Peace" engraved on the bottom, paid for by his mother, as families were allowed to add text to the gravestones if they so wished at the cost of 3½ pence per letter.
