Sidney Harold Luck was born in Howden-le-Wear early in 1895, and was baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Willington on the
18
th
April 1895, the son of Septimus and Mary Jane Luck. According to the 1911 Census he was one of fifteen children, although by then
six of his siblings had died.
As a young man he worked in a brickyard, and was later a miner, as were many of his family.
Within weeks of Britain's involvement in the war Sidney Luck, aged 19, joined the 15
th
Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. As part of the
Expeditionary Force, he left England for France in September 1915, only to return two months later suffering from a gunshot wound to his
foot.
In February 1916 Sidney returned to the front line in France. He had two weeks' home leave in Howden-le-Wear early in 1917, and
returned to France on the 17
th
March. He rejoined his unit, but just seven weeks later, on the 5
th
May, he was killed in action during the
Battle of Arras. Sidney's body was never recovered, but he is remembered on the Arras Memorial.
