Edward BROWELL
Private 10830, 1

East Yorkshire Regiment.
Died 4

Edward Browell was born in Crook in 1886. From a very young age he worked below ground in the mines, and in 1901 at the age of 15
he was a driver.
Edward volunteered and enlisted in the 1
st
East Yorkshire Regiment on the 13
th
May 1915, travelling to France in August 1915. The
following year his regiment was involved in the fighting in the Somme area. At the beginning of June the British trenches experienced
heavy shelling, and on the 4

June one of the casualties was Edward Browell, who died after 1 year and 23 days' service.
The records from Norfolk Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt, show that from the 1
st
East Yorkshire Regiment 2 officers were killed, and 19
soldiers, including Private Edward Browell, were buried along with a sapper from the Royal Engineers who was working with them in the
trenches. They are all listed with their date of death being the 4
th
June, although the war diary says it was on the 3
rd
and 4
th
of the month.
