Thomas TRATHEN Private 16828, 6 th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Died 26 th September 1915. Thomas Trathen was born in North Skelton, Yorkshire, in 1881, but by the time of the 1911 Census the family is living in Fir Tree. Thomas was working in the local drift mine as a putter, alongside his father and two brothers. Thomas enlisted in August 1914 and was attached to the newly formed 6 th Service Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. They moved to Bordon for training and in February moved to Bramshott in Hampshire. The battalion landed in France on the 11 th May 1915, and four months later Thomas was killed in action during the Battle of Loos, at the age of 34. Thomas Trathen is remembered with honour on the Loos Memorial at Dud Corner Cemetery in France, on the Scottish War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle, and on the Fir Tree War Memorial.
