Welcome

 Howden-le-Wear History Society
Howden-le-Wear is a busy village situated on the A689 road between Bishop Auckland and Crook Town in County Durham in the North-East of England. Six road routes converge at this former coal-mining settlement, now expanding with new residential developments while retaining 19 th century streets at its centre. Howden-le-Wear Local History Society was founded in 1995 by a small group of, mainly elderly, residents eager to record the history of the village and immediate environment before their wealth of information was lost to future generations. The society holds regular monthly meetings on the third Tuesday of each month, has welcomed many guest speakers to address the assemblies on a wide variety of interesting topics, and continues to be involved in many projects of local historical significance. Over the years, a large archive of old photographs and images has been collected, and artefacts, audio recordings of memoirs, documents, maps and books provide a valuable and accessible information base. The society has worked closely with Howden Primary School on a number of topics sharing knowledge and enthusiasm with future generations.
