Denby BENNINGTON Private 42067, 1 st /5 th Battalion, Welsh Regiment. Died 13th March 1918. Denby Bennington was born in 1897 at Escomb, near Bishop Auckland. Sometime before 1911 he moved to live with his aunt and her family in Howden-le-Wear. Denby was working as a grocer's assistant when he enlisted at Crook on the 12 th January 1916. Initially he was assigned to the Army Reserve, but was soon mobilised to the 1 st /5 th Battalion, Welsh Regiment. Denby embarked at Southampton with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force on the 10 th June 1917, disembarking at Alexandria on the 20 th . He joined his unit in the field on the 6 th July, but was hospitalised with diarrhoea on the 10 th October, rejoining his unit on the 18 th January 1918. He was killed in the Battle for Drages Hill on the 13 th March 1918. His body was not recovered, and his name is inscribed on the Jerusalem War Cemetery Memorial.
