John Cooper Walkington was born in 1891 at Bishop Wilton, Yorkshire. His occupation is shown in the 1911 Census as being a horseman
on a farm.
John moved to Fir Tree and was working as a colliery banksman. He enlisted in the Durham Light Infantry on the 11
th
December 1915.
As a result of some problems with his ears he was placed on the medical reserve list until the problem had cleared up, and was finally
mobilised on the 11
th
February 1916 with the 22
nd
Battalion, Durham Light Infantry.
He served in France from the 6
th
June 1916, but was given home leave from the 19th - 28
th
September during which time he married. He
returned to France within days of his marriage, and died of his wounds on the 20
th
February 1918 at the Somme Redoubt.
He was buried at Ypres Reservoir Cemetery.
