John Geoffrey Stobart was born on the 28
th
January 1892 in Spellow Hill,
Knaresborough in North Yorkshire. He was educated at Aysgarth School
and at Cambridge, where he was a member of the Officer Training Corps.
He volunteered for service at the outbreak of war, and was assigned to the

Rifle Brigade when he was deployed to France in February 1915. On
the 15
th
March 1915, whilst leading his platoon retaking trenches in the St
Eloi area near to Ypres, he was shot and killed, aged 23.
Geoffrey Stobart was buried at the Voormezeele Enclosure Cemetery No.
3 in Belgium. He is also remembered on the Fir Tree War Memorial and
on a brass plaque in St Margaret of Antioch Church in Crossgate,
Durham.
