Henry WALKER
Private 24776, 15
th
Durham Light Infantry.
Died 3rd May 1917.
Henry Walker was born in 1897, the second of four children of John and Caroline Walker of Blackett's Yard, Wheatbottom, Crook. By 1910
the family was living in Valley Terrace, Howden-le-Wear.
The 1901 Census shows that John and his two eldest sons, Frederick, now aged 16, and Henry, now aged 14, worked in the local coal
mining industry. During 1914 and 1915 both Frederick and Henry enlisted in the Durham Light Infantry. Frederick survived the war and
lived until the age of 67, but Henry was killed in action in Flanders on the 3
rd
May, 1917. His name is inscribed on the Arras War Memorial.
The name on the Howden-le-Wear War Memorial is "F. Walker" while the name on the Church Roll of Honour is "W. Walker", but other
discrepancies occur between the names on the two memorials, and it is reasonable to assume that the initials have been confused.
