Memories of being Howden-le-Wear Coronation Queen
(by telephone)
Preparation began several weeks before Coronation Day. A dance was
held in the Women’s institute and the finalists were selected.
The judging panel consisted of several members of the village Coronation
Committee also a Member of Parliament (maybe Manny Shinwell??)
I was very surprised and very excited when I was chosen. Alfie Harker
went in his car to collect my father (who had walking
difficulties) to come and join me in the celebrations.
My attendants were Laura Golden and Brenda Lowther.
We were all taken to a fashion warehouse with Jessie and Jack Haley to
choose the dresses we were to wear for the
Celebrations. I remember my dress was lilac lace with a bolero effect. We
all were given sashes to wear and flower tiaras.
Before the Coronation many events took place in the village. I had to
attend each one and give a speech. I was absolutely
terrified at the thought of speaking at each event.
On Coronation Day there was a large procession of all the groups and
many residents dressed in fancy dress. The
procession paraded around the village. I remember Laura, Brenda and I
were taken around by car. I believe it was Billie Bulls taxi.
Everyone in the village seemed to be involved and joined in all the
Celebrations.
For me it was a wonderful experience but I am afraid I do not
remember very much. It was a long time ago.
